Are you a woman of the 80’s? If so, you know what I mean when I say “women’s liberation movement”. I was raised in a home where girls were taught to get an education, work hard, expect equal pay for equal work, and make sure you can support yourself. The thought never occurred to me to be a stay-at-home mom. Homeschooling, who would do that? Whether you were called to work outside of the home or work inside of the home, and choose to have children, God requires you to “build up a child”.
I believe our children have suffered somewhat for the lack of parenting that exists in our country today. Day care providers are not responsible for teaching our children right from wrong, nannies are not responsible for watching our children play sports or play the piano in a recital, teachers are not responsible for teaching our children respect for one another, and bible school leaders are not responsible for teaching our children about God. “Parent Outsourcing” is part of our culture today.
How then can we “Build up a Child”? I love this phrase by Tony Evans, “It is far easier to shape a child than to repair an adult”. Parenting is not a science, but an art form. We second guess every decision we make, because there is no standard work. Additionally, every child is different. So, what works for one child may not work for the next in your household. However, even flawed parenting is better than absentee parenting. We begin shaping our child the day they are born by loving them, investing time, disciplining, teaching respect, and surrounding them with a village.
